TIME video: 10 Questions for Jorge Ramos

Edited excerpts from the interview (see the reference link below for the complete text):

"Do you think Mexico would ever allow U.S. military intervention (to control the drug cartels)?

Mexico will never accept U.S. military intervention. Mexicans always remember 1848. That's when Mexico lost more than half its territory [in a war with the U.S.]. Having said that, I think that the presence of U.N. soldiers in parts of Mexico, including Ciudad Juárez, should be a possibility.

Whom would you like to interview whom you have not yet interviewed?

Nelson Mandela. He always understood that injustice cannot last forever.

Hispanics are now the largest U.S. minority and growing. In your view, what is the most important implication of that fact?

The process of change is well under way. The U.S. is the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, with the exception of Mexico. It means — and I am completely convinced of this — that the first Hispanic President has already been born."

Rick Steves: In Europe, strip off all your inhibitions

From Chicago Tribune:

Any traveler to Europe who has visited a bath, perused a newsstand, hung out at a beach or park on a sunny day or channel-surfed broadcast TV late at night has noticed that Europeans are more relaxed than Americans about nudity.

In the south of France, sunbathing grandmothers have no tan lines. In Norway, young children play naked in fountains. On summer days, accountants in Munich head to the park on their lunch break to grin and bare it, trading corporate suits for birthday suits. It's quite a shock to Americans (they are the ones riding their bikes into the river and trees).

Airstream International - Futuristic RV

From Chicago Tribune:

Since Airstream first set up shop in L.A. in the 1920s, the manufacturer, which has since moved to Ohio, has become synonymous with luxury and style. The creme de la creme of trailers, an Airstream is the sort of thing that inspires lust in those who wander. The owner of a 34-foot Holiday Rambler motor home stopped me at the campground where we stayed and said with a sigh, "I've been wanting one of those for 60 years."

Airstreams are prized for their aerodynamic architecture and unmistakable " Lost in Space" silver siding assembled from studded sheets of metal. Their exteriors look like lunar modules whose hard corners were melted into round forms during atmospheric reentry. Their interiors are equally NASA'd out, with more storage space and cubbies than seems possible considering their dimensions.

"Cicerone" certification exam to bring beer the respect it deserves

From Chicago Tribune:

The Cicerone (SIS-er-rone) exam is an exhaustive array of short answer, tasting and essay questions about brewing, storing, serving beer and pairing it with food. In three years, Daniels has designated 1,400 certified beer servers, 120 Certified Cicerones and one — yes, one — Master Cicerone. Each level demands more expertise.

Daniels believes deeply in the "beer clean" glass, which must be rinsed prior to serving to remove traces of sanitizer.

It takes two hands to pour a beer," and his method is this: hold the glass at a 45 degree angle, pour along the side, then about halfway through, tilt both glass and bottle vertical. You want an inch or so of head. If you want to be a Cicerone, you'd better know that.

New U.S. citizen optimistic about America's future - Chicago Tribune

From Chicago Tribune:

America was deliberately designed to be vast, dynamic and mobile.

James Madison, in Federalist No. 10, argued that a large republic is better than a small one because the larger number of citizens results in so many competing interests that no small-minded faction can ever gain a permanent upper hand. Abraham Lincoln resented parochial stasis and fought to preserve a vibrant Union with opportunities for the kind of self-driven upward mobility that he had experienced.

Chicago: 10 things you might not know about the South Side

From Chicago Tribune:

"The World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, located along the lakefront from 56th to 67th streets, made the South Side home to many "firsts": the first Ferris wheel, the first sales of a treat later called Cracker Jack, and the debut of a fictional pancake maker named Aunt Jemima. A pancake mix company hired Chicagoan Nancy Green, a former Kentucky slave, to play Jemima at the fair. Political correctness was many decades away.

Pill Hill was so named because so many doctors called it home. Today, the neighborhood nestled inside Calumet Heights is still the upscale home to many professionals.

The first fingerprints used to convict an American of murder were found in what is now the Beverly neighborhood. Thomas Jennings was burglarizing a house in 1910 when the homeowner confronted him. Jennings killed him. He also left fingerprints on a freshly painted railing outside the house, and police later picked him up as a suspicious character. Based on the fingerprints, he was convicted and hanged."

Mr. Gele - Master of Nigeria's gravity-defying headgear - CNN video

The Houston-based businessman has made an artform out of tying a gele -- the gravity-defying headwraps worn by Nigerian women.

They have been worn by Nigerian women for generations, but in recent years has become the ultimate fashion accessory for important parties and events in the U.S., something that Segun Gele partially credits himself for.

Segun Gele now charges $650 to tie wraps for brides and their party for Houston weddings, and $1,000 plus hotel, rental car and airfare for out-of-town weddings. Knowing brides reserve him a year in advance, well aware of his popularity.

It's the only business he's done since he moved to the U.S., and one that's showing no signs of slowing down.

The 39 Clues, Book 4: Beyond the Grave - review of Audible.com book

Beyond the Grave is the 4th book in the 39 clue series written by Jude Watson. The audio book is read by David Pittu and includes a bonus feature where Grace Cahill is featured talking on a game-show (available from Audible.com). In this book, Dan and Amy go after an Ekat clue left by branch founder, Katherine Cahill.

After uncovering the Tomas clue, gold, left by them in a cave in Seoul, Korea by the famous samouri, Tomoyoti Hideyoshi, they head to Egypt after discovering a clue to their next location in an anagram decoding to El Sakhet (of the Sakhet). Sakhet is an ancient Egyptian goddess.

The book starts out with Dan, Amy and Nellie in the middle of the Con El Camili marketplace in Cairo, Egypt. After encountering their cousin, the Russian Irina Spasky, who has set out to kill them, Dan and Amy flee getting lost in the process. While barging for a fake statue, they meet the blonde, green eyed British archeologist Theo Cotter who saves them from buying a fake Sakhet statue and helps them regroup with their au pair Nelllie Gomez. Theo leads them to Senari House, where Dan and Amy find their first hint towards the clue, a letter written to Napoleon. However, Nellie, Amy and Dan are soon caused to flee Senari House after discovering the letter, leaving Theo alone.

After hailing a cab, they head towards their hotel which they booked with their uncle Alistar’s recent traveler card. When they get there they learn that the five star hotel is really a cover up for the Ekaterina stronghold. When they enter the stronghold, Amy tells Dan that she thinks that their beloved grandmother Grace Cahill, may have been preping them for the clue hunt all along which leads them to mistrust her. In the stronghold they meet Alistar Oh’s uncle, Bae Oh who traps them in a plastic cube. After making their escape they meet Theo Cotter’s grandmother, Hillary who happened to be good friends with Grace. After regrouping with Theo at Hillary’s house, Hillary hands them a Christmas card and the missing Sakhet both gifts from Grace. With Dan’s help the trio finds a hint hidden in the Sakhet making them realize that the next clue is hidden in Queen Nefertiti’s tomb.

Soon, Amy, Dan, Nellie, and Theo grab a flight to Luxor where they explore Nefertiti’s tomb for ten minutes. When they head back to the boat, Dan and Amy sneak off to the tomb again and this time successfully obtain the hieroglyphics which they decipher on the boat to mean island, Isis, column, and wall. Sadly, Jonah Wizard, one of Dan and Amy’s competitors in the clue hunt sends them a drift to a crocodile infested island. Fortunately they find their way off the island with the help of a fisherman. Soon, the quartet book a room in the old Cateract Hotel. That night, Dan , Amy and Nellie discover that Theo and hillary have been trying to steal Grace’s Sakhet. The siblings use Theo’s betrayal to send Irina Spasky on a wild goose chase.

The next day, the trio discovers that Alistar Oh has been spying on them. They also discover an old painting that Grace made which was a map to the island of Phille which was submerged under water after the new dam was built. Alistar helps them go underwater to find the clue in his submarine. However, when they get there they find out that the madrigals got there first and crossed out the clue. After almost dying in the submersible the Cahills head back disappointed only to find out that Grace was leading them to the clue. Soon, they are hot on a new trail where they find a picture of the clue but ar still not able to identify it. At the hotel, Amy discovers that the clue is myrrh. The discovery leads the siblings to once again trust Grace. The book ends with the Madrigals attacking the Ekat stronghold.

The next book is called the Black Circle written by Patrick Carman.

Animals of the World Map: North

IMAG0055.jpg

Animals in the map:

Antlered sculpin. The Pacific staghorn sculpin, Leptocottus armatus, is a common sculpin (Cottidae) found in shallow coastal waters along the Pacific coast from Alaska to Baja California. The sole member of its genus, it is unusual for having spined antler-like projections on its gill covers; it can raise the projections as a defense mechanism. Staghorn sculpins are slender fish, with a grayish olive above, pale creamy yellow sides, and a white belly.

Grizzly bear. The grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis), also known as the silvertip bear, is a subspecies of brown bear (Ursus arctos) that lives in the uplands of western North America. This subspecies is thought to descend from Ussuri brown bears which crossed to Alaska from Eastern Russia 100,000 years ago.

Sockeye salmon. Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), also called red salmon or blueback salmon, is an anadromous species of salmon found in the Northern Pacific Ocean and rivers discharging into it. Sockeye salmon is the third most common Pacific salmon species, after pink and chum salmon. The name "sockeye" is believed to be a folk adaptation of the anglicization of sθə́qəy̓, its name in Halkomelem, the language of the indigenous people along the lower reaches of the Fraser River.

Red-breasted Nuthatch. The Red-breasted Nuthatch, Sitta canadensis, is a small songbird. Their breeding habitat is coniferous forests across Canada, Alaska and the northeastern and western United States. They excavate a nest in dead wood, often close to the ground. They smear the entrance to their nest with pitch. These birds are often permanent residents, but they regularly migrate into the southern United States if the food supply fails. There is also a White-breasted Nuthatch.

The nuthatches are a genus, Sitta, of small passerine birds belonging to the family Sittidae. Characterised by large heads, short tails, and powerful bills and feet, nuthatches advertise their territory using loud, simple songs. All members of this genus nest in holes or crevices. Their habit of wedging a large food item in a crevice and then hacking at it with their strong bills gives this group its English name.

Moose. The moose (North America) or European elk (Europe) (Alces alces) is the largest extant species in the deer family.
