Sofia, Bulgaria: Layers of History and Diversity: "More info about travel to Bulgaria: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/bulgaria Because of Bulgaria's strategic position, Sofia sits on layers of history. From ancient Greeks and Romans to fearsome Slavic warriors, from Ottoman pashas to Cold War communists, each left its mark."

Boyana Church (UNESCO/NHK)

Located on the outskirts of Sofia, Boyana Church consists of three buildings. The eastern church was built in the 10th century, then enlarged at the beginning of the 13th century by Sebastocrator Kaloyan, who ordered a second two storey building to be erected next to it. The frescoes in this second church, painted in 1259, make it one of the most important collections of medieval paintings. Source: UNESCO TV / © NHK Nippon Hoso Kyokai

Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO - Bulgaria has 4 entries on the list http://buff.ly/1OCv1ER in BG, from National Geographic: http://buff.ly/1OCv7MH

UNESCO established its lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage with the aim of ensuring the better protection of important intangible cultural heritages worldwide and the awareness of their significance. Through a compendium of the different oral and intangible treasures of humankind worldwide, the program aims to draw attention to the importance of safeguarding intangible heritage, which UNESCO has identified as an essential component and as a repository of cultural diversity and of creative expression.

The list was established in 2008 when the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage took effect.

Bulgarian History: Bombing of Sofia in 1940's

5 minutes Sofia - Bombing of Sofia - YouTube http://buff.ly/1cTmXbb

The bombing of Sofia in World War II was one of the biggest disasters in the city's entire history. Between the autumn 1943 and the spring of 1944 more than 2,000 people were killed, the center of Bulgaria's capital was destroyed, historic buildings and streets were lost forever.

My soul is grief. My soul is call
Because I am a bird picked off.
To death is doomed my wounded soul --
Soul wounded by the love.

St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral in Sofia, Bulgaria

If there is a single most prominent symbol in the recent history of Sofia, it is undoubtedly St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral. As a building and a cultural site the cathedral is a true jewel in the crown of the capital.

You could hardly find a place like this anywhere else. Foundations that conceal bones and history, tell of faith and love, sadness and happiness, excitement and grief... Going back in time for 15 centuries.
